Giant Gundam statue in Japan

For those of you who have missed it, a giant robot has landed in Japan and caused chaos in the country! Well, not exactly.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime series, a 18 meter tall, 35 ton, full scale RX-78-2 was built in Odaiba, Tokyo. The statue was finished in early June but was officially unveiled on July 11th and will be on display in Shiokaze Park until August 31.

This has caused quite a bit of interest, not only in Japan but also in other countries. I know people who have traveled to Japan just to see this giant statue!

The project, called “Green Tokyo Gundam Project“, has also another purpose and it is to promote the revitalization of parks and make the city greener and more eco-friendly for the next generation of children and future of Tokyo.

Here are some photos of the Gundam:

Once every hour the statue comes to life and puts on a 5 minute show for the people who have come to see it. Lights will start flashing on it’s body, it will make sound effects and even move it’s head. Check out the video below to see for yourself!

Pretty cool, isn’t it?
